Our General Education Curriculum & Goal

We balance each major with an interdisciplinary general education core curriculum so you are well-rounded in all subject areas. Although scientific and technical knowledge is important, you need skills in areas such as effective written and verbal communication, team work, cultural understanding and psychology.

Our goal is to provide is to provide you with an integrative educational experience that complements programs and majors, and contributes to life long learning. The general education curriculum features an integrated, connected curriculum emphasizing competencies and skills as well as content. This provides you with a broad range of information and skills to inform the relationship of more focused disciplinary study to a larger body of knowledge by finding and making connections.

Our guiding ideals:

  • Education goes beyond knowing to doing what one knows.
  • Education outcomes are general abilities which are transferable, not specific tasks.
  • We educated for a workforce that is likely to be very different in the future from what we have today.
  • We educate for life long retention and transferability of ideas and information.
  • General education extends throughout your academic career. It is not just a freshman and sophomore experience and includes co-curricular activities.
  • Students learn best when they have voice, self authorship and take an active, participatory role in their education.
  • General education is not confined in a curriculum but involves the interactions within the larger HU community to form a community of learners.
