Q:Are all 12th graders eligible to enroll in the Harrisburg University of Science & Technology College in High School program?

A:Yes, all 12th graders in good academic standing, with a letter of support from a teacher can enroll for University level credit in specifically designed classes. You can enroll as an individual or work with school programs to enroll with a cohort (group of students) from your school.

Q:Can 11 th graders enroll in the College in High School program?

A:Yes, under specific circumstances, motivated 11 th graders are eligible to enroll. 11 th graders who are motivated, college bound, have a support letter from a guidance counselor, and have maintained a B or better GPA are welcome. All 11 th graders should speak with the coordinator of our College in the High School Program prior to enrolling.

Q:How is the Harrisburg University of Science & Technology College in High School program different from others?

A:There are three important differences. 1. The courses selected for College in High School are taught by university charter faculty who understand the developmental needs of younger-first time college students. 2. All students in the College in High School Program will be assigned an academic advisor who can help you throughout the semester, as well as the college application process 3. Your faculty instructor and academic advisor will be interested in writing (if appropriate) letters of support for your college application regardless of your choice of school.

Q:Who develops the course materials?

A:University faculty will develop the course materials. The rigor and mode of instruction is exactly what you will find in a Freshman level college course. Harrisburg University is different only in that our courses require “active” participation and engagement in the material. You can't sit back and just listen!

Q:Who will my instructors be?

A:The university has designed specific faculty who have been chosen for their unique advising and mentoring skills to teach College in High School.

Q:Will I be required to purchase text books and/or classroom materials?

A:Yes, unless you are attending on a specific grant with your school or school district, you will have to purchase the same text as other students. As a rule, Harrisburg University of Science & Technology aims to minimize course text cost and materials for all students. None-the-less, prepare to spend between $10 - $100 on text, depending on the course.

Q:Do I need to take a placement test?

A:Yes. All dual enrollment students are required to take a placement test in order to determine eligibility for certain courses. However, the results of the placement test are not a factor used to determine admission to the program.

Q:What happens if I enroll and then decide to drop the course?

A:College in High School students are governed by the same University policies as all students, concerning drop and add periods. Our policy states “Tuition is considered fully earned by the University at the end of the second week of classes.” (Student Handbook, page 24)

Q:If I am accepted into the Harrisburg University of Science & Technology College in High School program, am I accepted to study towards a specific degree?

A:Your performance in your College in High School courses will be a very good indicator of your abilities and likelihood of success. Acceptance into College in High School is not an automatic acceptance to degree seeking admissions. You will still have to submit the required admissions materials. A successful completion of the College in High School courses will make your college application more competitive regardless of your choice of school in the future.

Q:Will Harrisburg University of Science & Technology send a copy of my transcript and letters of evaluation to other colleges and universities?

A:Yes, the Office of Student Records and Registration will keep on file and send upon your request a copy of your academic record to the school you indicate.

Q:Are there scholarships available to pay for my College in High School credits?

A:Yes. Many high schools and school districts have set aside funds for their students to take advanced courses through colleges. In addition, Harrisburg University has special scholarships available for dual enrollment students. Contact Financial aid at 901.5115 to apply for financial aid.

Q:Can I have my credits count towards high school credit as well as Harrisburg University of Science & Technology College in High School credit?

A:Yes, students usually find they have Math, Science, or English credits which can be used by both high school and college. Many courses in Humanities and Social Sciences are also credited by both.

A:You’ll use the same basic application for admission, but we’ve streamlined the process to keep it simple. Print the instructions attached here and use these as a guide when completing the application.
