Biotechnology is the use of biology and technology to solve some of the most urgent human, environmental and scientific issues facing society today. Biotechnology applies new methods in biology, genetics, developmental chemistry, cellular and molecular biology to human disease diagnosis, treatment and cure, improved agricultural production and drug discovery. Thanks to television shows like CSI, you can watch how biotechnology is transforming forensic investigation. Biotech creates new food products such as disease-resistant yeast. Seventy percent of all processed food items readily available in the supermarket owe their existence to biotechnology. Biotechnology is found virtually everywhere.
Careers
Biotechnology is growing rapidly and many opportunities exist in this area. A B.S. degree in biotechnology from HU paves the way to a career in the more than 1,500 biotech companies in the U.S., as well as positions in teaching and research, in medical, academic, governmental, pharmaceutical, and other industrial settings.

The role of biotechnology in our society is rapidly growing with career paths including: Health and Medicine; Regenerative Therapies and Cloning; Disease and Vaccine Research; DNA Technologies; Forensic Toxicology and Pathology; Food Safety Testing and Production; Agriculture; Forensics and Law Enforcement; Environmental Studies; Pollution and Waste Control; Renewable Energy; Green Plastics; Bio-Defense and Nanotechnology.
Our Program
If you love making new discoveries, conducting experiments, and learning science then consider this major. You can concentrate in Forensics or Molecular & Microbial Biotechnology. You’ll learn from top professors at HU and from members of our corporate faculty, including the Dauphin County Coroner. You get hands-on experiences in the laboratory and in the field. We match you to internships in the region and pair you with a business mentor. You’ll take courses in communications, creative writing and leadership so you can bridge the gap between the day-to-day realities of research and business.
