Harrisburg University Web Space/FTP
FTP via
As a Harrisburg University student, you have been allocated 50MB of web storage at http://my.harrisburgu.net . This space will allow you to store files on the internet as well as develop and host web pages.
Your web pages will be accessible by adding a tilde (~) and your username after the domain URL.
Example: http://my.harrisburgu.net/~UserName
If an updated index.html file, containing your desired web page, is uploaded to your web space, it would be viewable at the above URL (with your username).
An FTP (File Transfer Protocol) program is necessary to transfer files to and from your web space. The following posts will illustrate how to connect and transfer using various FTP clients.
FTP via Internet Explorer
One of the simplest ways to connect using FTP is through Internet Explorer. Once you are logged in and connected it is very similar to working within Windows Explorer on your local hard drive. You can copy, paste, create folders, as well as drag and drop files. In order to establish the connection, you will want to open an Internet Explorer window. Once open, you will enter the address ftp://my.harrisburgu.net and hit enter. Notice the ftp instead of http; this is critical to making the right connection.

If the address was entered correctly, you should see a logon prompt like the one below. This prompt requires a username and password to proceed to your web space. To log on, use your Harrisburg University provided username and password in the corresponding boxes and click the “Log On” button.

Once you are successfully logged in, you will see a window that is very similar to a Windows Explorer window. You should also see a file, index.html, which is the current default web page. You can now upload and download files, create folders, or modify the index.html to your own web page. It is as simple as dragging and dropping the files as you would on your computer’s local directories.

Creating files or folders is accomplished the same way you would do it through Windows. Simply right click on a blank area of the window, choose “new” on the menu, and choose “folder.”

A “new folder” should appear, which you can rename by right clicking on it and choosing “rename” from the menu.

After creating and renaming your folder, your window should look like the one below. You can create multiple folders to keep your files and web space organized.

FTP via SmartFTP
