Overview of features of Live@EDU

As a student of Harrisburg University, you will be supplied with an internet based email account.  This account is required for all Harrisburg University business and can be accessed by visiting http://live.com  

  • Keep your email after Graduation!
  • Outlook Web Access for email management
    • ActiveSync for support phones and ability to set up Text Message alerts for all phones on major cellphone providers.
    • Share your outlook calendar events with your friends.
    • Set up Inbox folders in order to better organize your inbox and ability to create inbox rules for additional organization.
    • Sync other email accounts and have them pulled into your Live@EDU account.
  • Access to web versions of Microsoft Office, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote for free and automatically saves to your SkyDrive.
  • Access to Microsoft SkyDrive with 25 GBs of free storage
    • 2 GBs of free automatic backup storage if you install Microsoft Live essentials for windows.
    • Ability to share certain files on SkyDrive with other students for group project collaboration.
  • Ability to create email groups in order for easier group collaboration on projects, and HU clubs.
  • Access to Windows Live Messenger using your my.harrisburgu.edu account

Connecting to Live@EDU via an email client (POP3)

  • On the left hand task bar click on "Add e-mail account".
  •          

  • A window should pop up that is similar to the one below. Enter the following information and click "Next".
    • Enter your Harrisburg University email address.
    • Enter your current password for email account.
    • Enter a display name.

             

  • Another window should pop up, requiring the following information.
    • Set the incoming mail server to a "POP3" server and the server address to pod51004.outlook.com using port 995.
    • Check the box next to "This server requires a secure connection (SSL)".
    • Log on using "Clear text authentication" is selected in the drop down box.
    • For Login ID, use the username (full email address) that has been provided to you for your HU email.
    • Outgoing Server is pod51004.outlook.com and port is 587.
    • Lastly check the boxes next to "This server requires a secure connection (SSL) and My outgoing server requires authentication"

             

Live@EDU Mobile ActiveSync Connections

Harrisburg University’s Student Email supports Exchange ActiveSync to your iPhone, Android, or any other mobile device that has Exchange ActiveSync capabilities.

  • Below is key information that you will need in order to setup ActiveSync on your device
    • o Server address: pod51004.outlook.com
    • Server address: pod51004.outlook.com
    • For domain; you will either leave it blank, set it to optional (as appears in the iPhone screen cap) or you may need type in your full username (as appears in the android screen cap).
    • Check "Use secure connection (SSL)" cert if that option is available to choose.

    Below are screen caps of Android and iPhone setup for ActiveSync with the correct settings:

             

  • You should see a message that the connection was successful and should be able to choose items to sync (Mail, Contacts, and Calendar).
  • To confirm the connection you can browse to your Live@EDU account. Once you are logged in, go into options and you should see a phone tab on the left hand side, click on that. You should see a page similar to the one below, with your device listed
  •          

  • Please note there is a “Wipe Device” button that is available when you highlight your phone. If you click this button it will...Restore your phone to factory defaults and wipe all of your user data.

IMPORTANT: Please be advised that Harrisburg University of Science and Technology is unable to store or restore any phone settings or data from your personal mobile device and you, the individual, are solely responsible for the content contained in the device and waive any and all claim of liability against Harrisburg University of Science and Technology resulting from any data elimination action using Exchange ActiveSync capability.

How to import SmarterMail email into Live@EDU

  • Log into the new Live@EDU student email and in the top right corner of the screen you will see an "Options" button, proceed to click on it.
  • On the next screen you should see the "Connected Accounts" box on the lower half of the webpage. Once you have located that text box, click on the button labeled "New…"
  • A window will pop up similar to the one below, use your SmarterMail username and password and click "Next"
  • After a few moments it will fail trying to connect to SmarterMail and a message will pop up, you need to hit "Yes" to allow the non-secure connection.
  • It will take a few moments to make a connection to your account. After the connection is made you will be returned back to the options page. You should see your my.harrisburgu.net account listed under connected accounts with a status of OK.
  • When you are finished, return to your inbox and you should see all messages (sent and received) that are currently in your SmarterMail account starting to populating in your Live@EDU account.

Adding your phone to Live@EDU for text message notifications

  • Once logged into your Live@EDU account and you are in your inbox, click on options in the right hand corner of the window.
  • Once in options you will see "Phone" in the menu bar on the left of the window, once you click on that you will see 2 tabs at the top of the window, click on text messaging.
  • Once you click on "Turn On Notifications…" a new window will pop up. Choose your country and then your mobile phone carrier and then click on "Next".
  • The next window will ask you to put in your phone number with the area code, once that is done click on "Next".
  • Once you hit “Next” you will see a screen asking for a passcode, you need to wait until you receive a text message from your Live@EDU account.
  • Your text message should look similar to the one below.
  • Once you type in the passcode and click on “Finish” you will get a second text message similar to the one below.
  • You will turn to the main text messaging options page after the process is complete.
  • From this point you can set up text message reminders of calendar events. Also you can set up rules for email notifications to receive text message that email messages for specified email addressed. This is done by click on "Set up calendar notifications…" and "Set up e-mail notifications…" links.
