The University is mapping the route for colleges and universities to teach STEM disciplines through our NSF-funded Science Education for New Civic Engagements and Responsibilities (SENCER) project.  We’re working with 300 faculty from 75 colleges and universities across the nation to increase the number of students with degrees in science and technology in the U.S. The project develops courses focused on real-world issues --such as diabetes and other diseases, global climate change, nanotechnology and alternative energy -- as a way to expand the teaching of science and technology across academic disciplines.

The long-anticipated opening of Hollywood Casino at Penn National Race Course is rapidly approaching.  Before opening its doors to the public, Hollywood Casino is inviting members of the community to be among its first customers by attending a Play Night, 7p.m. – 1 a.m., Friday, February 8. All 2000 state-of-the-art slot machines will be fully operational on Play Night with proceeds benefiting Harrisburg University and three other local non-profit organizations.  Hollywood Casino mailed invitations. Please bring both the invitation and a valid ID with you.

Join us as we celebrate our Second Commencement Exercises and Partner's Day on May 15. We will gather to recognize our students' academic achievements and honor the many business mentors, internship hosts, strategic partners, and donors along with others in the community who contribute to our students' success. Commencement will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the Main Auditorium of the State Museum of Pennsylvania, located at 300 North Street in downtown Harrisburg.

RSVP by email to Events@HarrisburgU.net or call 717.901.5140.

Our larger efforts to help students climb the modern career ladder include actively promoting ways to enrich students’ knowledge of the important roles science and engineering play in modern society.  We’re partnering with other institutions across Central Pennsylvania to co-sponsor the Capital Area Science & Engineering Fair (CASEF) February 13-16. This event brings more than 300 aspiring local scientists, mathematicians and engineers, grades seven through 12, to downtown Harrisburg to exhibit their projects in one of 15 categories.

PMI
One of the leading membership associations for the project management profession has recognized our IT Project Management program offerings. The Project Management Institute® (PMI) designated the University as a Global Registered Education Provider.  We currently offer a master of science degree in IT Project Management and a graduate certificate in IT Project Management.  PMI is the world’s leading not-for-profit association for the project management profession. Receiving PMI’s Global Registered Education Provider distinction is an indicator of the connection between our curriculum and the professional standards of the field.

Classes for our new 18-credit GIS Technologist and Developer Certificate begin March 29. We go beyond the basic conceptual and functional aspects of geospatial imaging to more advanced applications, allowing students to use the latest technology, software and laboratory equipment. Corporate faculty from GeoDecisions, an award-winning leader in the GIS industry, lead the courses. More information on the courses, costs, and class schedules can be obtained by calling 717.901.5162 or email GISTech@HarrisburgU.net.

Construction for our 16-story $73-million Academic Center, slated to open within the year, is on time and on budget. Crews recently mounted the "commemorative" steel beam, which was signed by some fifty remarkable individuals who have made major philanthropic investments in the University.  The beam will permanently reside as part of the 16th floor structure and, as such, will not be covered with fire proofing. Therefore, this specially-prepared beam will be exposed and the signatures adorning it visible for all time.
