The Honorable Edward G. Rendell, Pennsylvania’s 45th Governor, will give the commencement address during the Commencement Exercises and Partners Day Celebration on Thursday, May 15, at 6:30 p.m. in the State Museum of Pennsylvania. As a STEM-focused private university, our mission to provide an applied science and technology education links directly with Governor Rendell’s efforts to coordinate a statewide infrastructure designed to motivate and prepare more students—from preschool through college—for careers in the STEM disciplines.

The continued fast-paced rise of Harrisburg University as a prominent institution of higher education requires the commitment and energy from many partners who work hand-in-hand with the University to deliver our educational model. Beyond the typical joy and excitement of our Commencement Exercises on May 15, we will recognize the many business mentors, corporate faculty, internship hosts, scholarship donors, and our strategic partner organizations. A special video commemorating our partners will air during the evening, and several dignitaries and leaders representing both the public and private sectors will participate in the celebration.

As of March 31, 2008, 57 businesses from the region have garnered nearly $39 million in work, including 22 minority- and women-owned businesses from the region, on the new 16-story $73-million Academic Center. Additionally, the Board of Trustees set a goal before construction of the Academic Center started in the fall of 2006 that 20 percent of the subcontractors hired to build the $73 million project were to be minority-owned businesses and 5 percent were to be owned by women. With about eight months left until the project is finished, the goal has been met. The achievement drew accolades in a Central Penn Business Journal editorial, Building the Economy. The editorial notes: “Good for HU, and good for the local business community, too.”

The Honorary Alumni Association is critically important to a new and growing University that does not yet have an alumni base. All of the funds raised through the Honorary Alumni Association are dedicated to scholarships and academic support for students. An investment in HU is one that you can be proud of and one that will pay dividends far into the future.
