Aug 11, 2008 - Seventy-Six Educators Named SENCER Leadership Fellows
The National Center for Science and Civic Engagement at Harrisburg University of Science and Technology has appointed 76 distinguished educators from colleges and universities around the nation to the inaugural class of SENCER Leadership Fellows. SENCER – Science Education for New Civic Engagements and Responsibilities – is the National Science Foundation-supported signature program of the National Center for Science and Civic Engagement (NCSCE) at the University.

Three well-respected business and community leaders have joined the Board of Trustees for Harrisburg University of Science and Technology. The University board has elected and welcomed aboard: W. Thomas (Tom) Kirchhoff, Jr., Executive Vice President & COO of Cleveland Brothers Equipment Co., Inc.; Jessica E. Meyers, Owner and President of JEM Group, a commercial construction company located in Harrisburg; and Robert M. Scaer, registered professional engineer, president of GeoDecisions and Senior Vice-President of Gannett-Fleming.

Harrisburg University of Science and Technology Associate Provost for Strategic Markets, Dr. Bilita Mattes, notes that the Commonwealth’s economic competitiveness in the future is dependent upon the educational readiness of the workforce in a recent essay she wrote that has appeared in the August 5th issue of The Patriot-News. Dr. Mattes, who has a professional background in training and development within business and industry, writes that it is a mistake to think of workforce development and higher education separately. Traditional higher education must have an intentional focus on, and commitment to, regional workforce development needs.
Aug 5, 2008 - Philadelphia Inquirer: Science Needs to Be Relevant & Fun
The world is changing at breakneck speed, presenting innumerable career opportunities for students with degrees in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields. And though students generally acknowledge that new inventions can solve issues such as clean water, disease eradication, and reducing pollution, teenagers aren’t entering the educational and career fields necessary to produce those solutions or for the United States to keep pace with other countries. To reduce the gap, and prepare more K-12 and college students—especially minorities and women—for STEM careers, Harrisburg University President, Dr. Mel Schiavelli, suggests that it is time to widen the education funnel so more students enter these critical disciplines. This requires making science and technology accessible and relevant, and introducing new approaches to teaching. That’s the topic of his opinion essay, Science Must Be Relevant and Fun, which appears in the August 4th issue of The Philadelphia Inquirer.

The fall class of students in Harrisburg University of Science and Technology’s M.S. of Information Technology Project Management program will enjoy the benefits of membership in the Keystone Chapter of the Project Management Institute (PMI). The Chapter Board voted to grant student memberships in PMI® for 20 members in the incoming class in the University’s M.S IT Project Management program. PMI® is the world’s leading not-for-profit association for the project management profession. The Keystone Chapter serves members in all parts of the state except Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and Erie, PA and is under the leadership of President Eric Berry, PMP.

Jul 15, 2008 - First Graduate Co-Authors Book
Harrisburg University of Science and Technology’s first graduate, Michael Wright '06, is now a published author. The Carlisle resident wrote nine of the 13 chapters for the book, Securing Citrix XenApp Server in the Enterprise, published by Syngress. The book is available for purchase at various outlets, and there are bonus chapters that are downloadable, too.

Nancy E. Adams has joined Harrisburg University of Science and Technology as Librarian. Ms. Adams oversees the planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of a wide-range of responsive and innovative library. She will lead information literacy integration, collection building, digital content management, and database licensing, and will work collaboratively to further shape both the University’s shared-service delivery and technology-across-the-curriculum initiatives. She began in this new role on July 1, 2008.

Harrisburg University of Science Technology has named Vincent P. Frank II as Director of Financial Aid Services. Mr. Frank’s responsibilities in this role include developing and executing financial aid programs and policies that lead to the enrollment and retention of students for undergraduate, graduate and adult programs in fulfillment of the University mission and enrollment goals. He joined the University on June 23.

A leader in the fields of multimedia and information technology will serve as director of the new Center for Advanced Entertainment & Learning Technologies at Harrisburg University of Science and Technology. Charles Palmer, who previously served as a faculty member at Carnegie Mellon University’s Entertainment Technology Center (ETC) since 2004, will begin his new appointment July 1.

The creation of Harrisburg University of Science and Technology is an example of a perfect storm that benefits everyone involved, writes Robert Scaer in an opinion piece appearing in the May 30 issue of Central Penn Business Journal. Mr. Scaer is senior vice president and chief information officer with East Pennsboro Township-based engineering firm Gannett Fleming Inc. and president of GeoDecisions. “Local businesses need a strong anchor city and access to quality graduates. The investment that Gannett Fleming has made to its community by investing in Harrisburg University has paid off because we are creating our own workforce,” wrote Mr. Scaer.
