• This Month in Science & Technology History
  There are several historic milestones relating to science and technology education this month, including: October 1, 1984: The groundbreaking science fiction novel Neurmancer was published in and featured a word now commonplace in popular culture: cyberspace. October 1-31: National Cyber Security Awareness Month. A national campaign focused on educating the American public, businesses schools, and government agencies about ways to secure their part of cyberspace, computers, and our nation’s critical infrastructure.

  The expansion of tools and techniques has created a demand for skilled workers who can determine needs, evaluate options, design and develop solutions, communicate visually and assess outcomes. • University Welcomes New Director & Faculty Member
  Dr. Amjad Umar has joined Harrisburg University of Science and Technology as Director of e-Business and professor of e-Business. He has written six books and more than 50 research papers in his areas of specialization that span e-business, enterprise architectures and integration, mobile computing, and information security. His 20+ years of experience in his areas of expertise includes academic assignments, senior research management positions in the industry, and consulting/advisory work around the globe.

• Judging the Best in Workplace Learning
  A Harrisburg University of Science and Technology faculty member served as a judge for the 2008 Brandon Hall Excellence in Learning Awards. Andrej Petroski, director of Learning Technologies and assistant professor of Learning Technologies, was an independent volunteer judged for the awards, which recognize the best in innovative learning content, technology, and initiatives in workplace learning.

• Systems Thinking for Managing IT Stakeholders and Teams
  Harrisburg University of Science and Technology and the Technology Council of Central PA are responding to market demands from project managers seeking opportunities to expand their areas of expertise into new specialties with a series of professional development opportunities that are scheduled to take place throughout 2008-2009. Systems Thinking for Managing IT Stakeholders and Teams is part of the University’s Beyond Project Management: Building Leadership and Performance Professional Development Series. The session is scheduled for Friday, November 21.

• National Society Recognizes University Program for Excellence in Science Education
  Wm. David Burns, professor of general studies, and Dr. Karen K. Oates, a former provost at the University, will receive the ASCB Bruce Alberts Award for Excellence in Science Education during the ASCB 2008 Annual Meeting in San Francisco. The award recognizes the tremendous impact of the National Science Foundation funded program, Science Education for New Civic Engagements and Responsibilities (SENCER), which Burns and Oates founded in 2001.

• University's Bookstore Opens In Strawberry Square
  Harrisburg University of Science and Technology will offer a bookstore in Strawberry Square starting Monday to serve incoming students. The store will remain open until Sept. 19. In previous years, Harrisburg University students have ordered and purchased textbooks online. Validis, the company offering the bookstore service, is to have a physical presence on the campus three times a year.

• Seventy-Six Educators Named SENCER Leadership Fellows
  The National Center for Science and Civic Engagement at Harrisburg University of Science and Technology has appointed 76 distinguished educators from colleges and universities around the nation to the inaugural class of SENCER Leadership Fellows. SENCER – Science Education for New Civic Engagements and Responsibilities – is the National Science Foundation-supported signature program of the National Center for Science and Civic Engagement (NCSCE) at the University.

• Three New Members Join University's Board of Trustees
  Three well-respected business and community leaders have joined the Board of Trustees for Harrisburg University of Science and Technology. The University board has elected and welcomed aboard: W. Thomas (Tom) Kirchhoff, Jr., Executive Vice President & COO of Cleveland Brothers Equipment Co., Inc.; Jessica E. Meyers, Owner and President of JEM Group, a commercial construction company located in Harrisburg; and Robert M. Scaer, registered professional engineer, president of GeoDecisions and Senior Vice-President of Gannett-Fleming.

• STEM LEARNING: Link Higher Education to Workforce Development
  Harrisburg University of Science and Technology Associate Provost for Strategic Markets, Dr. Bilita Mattes, notes that the Commonwealth’s economic competitiveness in the future is dependent upon the educational readiness of the workforce in a recent essay she wrote that has appeared in the August 5th issue of The Patriot-News. Dr. Mattes, who has a professional background in training and development within business and industry, writes that it is a mistake to think of workforce development and higher education separately. Traditional higher education must have an intentional focus on, and commitment to, regional workforce development needs.

• Philadelphia Inquirer: Science Needs to Be Relevant & Fun
  The world is changing at breakneck speed, presenting innumerable career opportunities for students with degrees in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields. And though students generally acknowledge that new inventions can solve issues such as clean water, disease eradication, and reducing pollution, teenagers aren’t entering the educational and career fields necessary to produce those solutions or for the United States to keep pace with other countries. To reduce the gap, and prepare more K-12 and college students—especially minorities and women—for STEM careers, Harrisburg University President, Dr. Mel Schiavelli, suggests that it is time to widen the education funnel so more students enter these critical disciplines. This requires making science and technology accessible and relevant, and introducing new approaches to teaching. That’s the topic of his opinion essay, Science Must Be Relevant and Fun, which appears in the August 4th issue of The Philadelphia Inquirer.

• PMI® Give Free Student Memberships to IT Project Management Students
  The fall class of students in Harrisburg University of Science and Technology’s M.S. of Information Technology Project Management program will enjoy the benefits of membership in the Keystone Chapter of the Project Management Institute (PMI). The Chapter Board voted to grant student memberships in PMI® for 20 members in the incoming class in the University’s M.S IT Project Management program. PMI® is the world’s leading not-for-profit association for the project management profession. The Keystone Chapter serves members in all parts of the state except Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and Erie, PA and is under the leadership of President Eric Berry, PMP.

• First Graduate Co-Authors Book
  Harrisburg University of Science and Technology’s first graduate, Michael Wright '06, is now a published author. The Carlisle resident wrote nine of the 13 chapters for the book, Securing Citrix XenApp Server in the Enterprise, published by Syngress. The book is available for purchase at various outlets, and there are bonus chapters that are downloadable, too.
